1896 at LTG:
The great-grandfather of the present-day proprietor, Philipp Schmitt from Landau in the Rhineland region of Germany, founded the company.
The principle business at that time involved road-rail haulage, which was performed with the company's own horse-drawn carriages.
1896 events of the day:
The Greek king Georg I opens the 1st modern Olympics on 6 April 1896 in front of more than 70,000 thrilled spectators in the stadium in Athens.
1929 at LTG:
Following the death of Philipp Schmitt, his son, Heinrich Schmitt, took charge of the business.
According to the records, lorries with "elastic" tyres were already being used in 1929.
1929 events of the day:
Black Friday on the New York stock exchange. On 25th October, the share prices collapse on Wall Street, incurring losses of up to 90%. The worldwide interest and currency structure crumbles. On 29th October, American banks temporarily suspend their payments. Start of the world economic crisis.
1936 at LTG:
Wine from Rhineland-Palatinate was first transported by regular services to the Black Forest, and later also to Lake Constance.
1936 events of the day:
- 1st August - opening of the XI Summer Olympic Games in Berlin (Germany).
- The first working helicopter is developed by Heinrich Focke, and goes on to fly in the year after.
- Konrad Zuse builds a prototype of the first digital computer using electromechanical relays.
1944 at LTG:
Three air raids on Landau. Each time, the company premises were badly hit.
1944 events of the day:
- 6th June - Invasion of Normandy by the Allied Forces (D-Day).
- 20th July - Failed assassination attempt on Hitler by von Stauffenberg.
- 16th December - Start of the German Ardennes offensive, which was meant to prevent the Allied Forces from advancing further.
1948 at LTG:
Following the currency reform, the first new Büssing lorry with 105 bhp was acquired.
1948 events of the day:
- 20th June - currency reform in the three western sectors of Germany. On presentation of ID and food ration cards, 40 German marks are paid out per person.
- The World Health Organisation (WHO) is founded.
1950 at LTG:
Mr Ruprecht Doll joins the company as managing member.
1950 events of the day:
- 31st January - Food ration cards are abolished in the Federal Republic of Germany.
- 9th May - With his idea of a united Europe, Robert Schuman lays the foundation stone for today's European Union.
- 25th June - Start of the Korean War.
1960 at LTG:
New building and opening of the Passau branch with a central garage.
1960 events of the day:
- 22nd May - Earthquake in Chile measuring 9.5 on the Richter scale leaves 4,000 to 5,000 dead.
- 17th September - Foundation of OPEC in Baghdad.
- 17th December - Plane crash in Munich. During the crash, the twin-engine Convair 346 damages St. Paul's church and sets a tram on fire. All 20 passengers on board the plane and 32 persons travelling on the tram die.
- The contraceptive pill is launched on the American market and soon proves highly popular amongst American women.
1965 at LTG:
Opening of the branch in Munich.
1965 events of the day:
- 18th March - The Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Leonov becomes the first man to walk in space.
- 6th April - The first commercial communications satellite, Early Bird, is launched.
- 9th November - 5.45 p.m. power cut in the north-eastern USA and in extensive parts of Canada, affecting some 30 million people.
1980 at LTG:
Business taken over by the founder's sons, Heinrich and Johannes Doll.
Now, the company headquarters are based in Garching near Munich.
1980 events of the day:
- 5th January - USA imposes sanctions on the Soviet Union after its invasion of Afghanistan.
- 6th April - Introduction of summer time in Germany.
- 26th September - Bomb attack at Munich's Oktoberfest kills 13 and injures over 200 persons.
1991 at LTG:
Building of the new branch in Hockenheim with a filling station, truck wash and works siding on a site area of 37,500 m². In conjunction with the subsequent extension in 1992, this site now offers 18,000 m² storage space and 600 m² office space.
1991 events of the day:
- 31st March - Disbanding of the Warsaw Pact.
- 20th June - German parliament decides to move from Bonn to Berlin.
- 19th August - Attempted coup on Mikhail Gorbachev.
- 26th December - Official break up of the Soviet Union and renaming as the Russian Federation, abbreviated to Russia.
1998 at LTG:
Building of the new Regensburg branch with works siding, filling station and truck wash. In conjunction with the subsequent extension in the year 2000, covering an area of 30,000 m², this site now offers a total of 18,000 m² storage space and 1,200 m² office space.
1998 events of the day:
- 14th parliamentary elections of the Federal Republic of Germany lead to the end of the 16 years of the "Kohl era", Gerhard Schröder is elected chancellor in a coalition between the SPD Social Democratic Party and Bündnis90/Die Grünen (Green Party), the latter being represented for the first time in its history in the Federal Government.
- The new HypoVereinsbank evolves as a result of the Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechselbank merging with the Bayerische Vereinsbank.
2002 at LTG:
The purchase of the adjoining site in Hockenheim permits the construction of the company's dedicated building for its beverage logistics business segment. On an area covering 16,000 m², the facility offers a total of 6,000 m² storage space, 150 m² office space and a works siding.
2002 events of the day:
- 1st January - The euro becomes the common currency in 12 states of the European union. Since then, the euro has been legal tender.
- Mid-August, after a period of persistent rain in the Erz and Sudeten Mountains, the rivers Elbe and the Mulde burst their banks, flooding vast expanses of land in the Czech Republic, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony.
2007 at LTG:
After a 6-month construction period the newly built logistics center was put into operation in Regensburg on 1 April on Junkersstraße 10. A total logistics area of 17,000 m² is now available on a total area of 36,000 m².
2007 events of the day:
- November - record oil prices continue. The crude oil price reaches 95 dollars a barrel (159 liters)
- November - the euro topped the USD 1.45 mark for the first time and therefore reached its highest level since the introduction of the single common currency.
